The History of Tastes (História dos Paladares), by Deana Barroqueiro, is
the history of mankind through food. An amazing universe unknown to most
people, and a treasure in danger all over the world, as lots of old recipes and
traditions are at the brink of extinction everywhere. To save some of this
immaterial world cultural heritage, especially the Portuguese, was the author’s
main purpose.
Deana Barroqueiro spent 7 years researching from thousands of ancient
and modern books and papers from all over the world, to build a universal
living puzzle of flavors, feelings, sensations and traditions, connected with
arts, literatures, sciences, religions, myths and tales of common or famous
people, because food is inherent to all human activities, from all nations. So,
the History of Tastes shows the evolution of flavors, culinary and gastronomy,
around the world, from the Stone Age,
throughout the centuries, to our Present, tormented by the Covid-19, with a
hopeful glance at a sustainably Future.
The author pays particular
attention to Portugal, which has influenced the gastronomy of so many
nations, in the five continents, and received their influences as well,
transforming the Mediterranean culinary in one of the richest and more
diversified gastronomies in the planet,
